Learn to swim for children

Posted by

Swimming and bathing is fun! Especially in summer – both in the outdoor pool and on holiday by the sea. But not everyone can swim – and that can be dangerous, as the statistics of bathing deaths every year show. One study says that one in four Germans cannot swim properly. How your child can best learn to swim, we explain to you here.

Why can’t all children swim?

Normally, children get swimming lessons at school from the third grade at the latest. However, too few sports teachers and limited access for schools to municipal swimming pools prevent teaching in many places. And if there are swimming pools, they are often older and in need of renovation. To save money, the city prefers to close these baths.

Many parents, on the other hand, rely too much on schools. In addition, there are parents who cannot afford to visit an outdoor or indoor pool with the children on a regular basis. There are also children who are afraid of water and voluntarily do not develop an interest in learning to swim.

What influence do cultural influences have or where the children grow up?

Swimming is not popular or curriculum in all areas or cultures. For example, many Filipinos cannot swim, although the Philippines consists of many islands. Swimming lovers have to teach themselves on their own initiative. Other peoples, on the other hand, are known to be excellent pearl or mussel divers. Swimming and diving are commonplace there.

What is the best way for your child to learn to swim?

First of all, it is very important that you do not put your child under pressure. It should like to stay in the water. Fun and games help with this.

Staying afloat on your own doesn’t mean being a good swimmer. Your child should practice regularly and preferably take a reasonable swimming course.

Especially with small children who do not want to or can not swim yet, you should not do without swimming wings. For the first exercises you can work with the swimming belt. The belt consists of several components, from which you can always remove a block.

In addition to the swimming belt, swimming tires or life jackets are a good swimming learning aid for children. You can also work with a swimming noodle or a swimming board. An excellent selection of different swimming aids can be found at the brand Beco Beermann. There are also leg swimmers and swimdiscs as well as the popular swimming belts with several blocks.

At what age can you learn to swim?

To get the kids used to the water, you can already start in the bathtub. Baby swimming courses also help. Experts recommend regular water habituation from the age of two. However, you can’t call it learning to swim yet. Due to the necessary coordination, experts such as the national youth coach Beate Ludwig recommend a minimum age of five or six years.

How do you take away your child’s fear?

When children are anxious, you can’t force them into the water. But you can get them used to it in a playful way. It is best to do so at a very early age, as mentioned above, in the bathtub or at a baby swimming course. Afterwards you can practice with them in the outdoor pool. Let them splash and play so that they form a natural connection to the water. Suitable toys such as boats, ducks or other special plastic toys help.

How do you make sure that children don’t get too cocky in the water?

If children only get to know the water in a playful way or have their first swimming badge, they often deal with it too carelessly. Or they overestimate their swimming skills. Therefore, be careful never to let them swim without supervision.

Give them the chance to practice swimming regularly. The better their education, the safer they move in the water. In addition, you can provide them with the above-mentioned children’s swimming aids or for older children also normal swimming aids. They serve as a buoyancy aid in an emergency.
