The Front Tray is still not ready for paper feed. Place the paper in the Front Tray correctly and then press the RESUME/CANCEL buttons on the printer.


The printer shakes the ink tanks when the Power lamp flashes bright blue, even though it isn’t in use. It can take between 10 seconds and 3 minutes.

Two flashes The Rear Tray does not allow paper to feed. Reload photopaper to your Rear Tray, and then press the RESUME/CANCEL buttons.
Three flashes Front Tray and Front Feed Help are closed./Paper jams. Close the Front Tray if it isn’t closed. The printer will resume printing. When printing from the Front Tray using the Front Feed help. close it and press the RESUME/CANCEL key on the printer. Paper jammed may cause the error to persist even after the Front Tray or Front Feed Help are opened. You can remove jammed paper from the printer and reload it. Next, press the RESUME/CANCEL key.
Four flashes¬† The ink tank was not properly installed./Ink could have run out. The ink tank might not be properly installed if the lamp isn’t lit. Install the appropriate Canon mx490 ink cartridge. The ink tank lamp may be flashing if there is insufficient ink. It is recommended to replace the ink tank. After ink tank removal, close the Top Cover to resume printing. If you wish to continue printing while printing is ongoing, click the RESUME/CANCEL Button with the ink tank attached. You can then continue printing even if the ink is out. After printing, immediately replace the empty ink tank. If printing continues under the ink out condition, the printer could be damaged.
Five flashes The Print Head has not been installed. To install the Printhead, follow the instructions in the setup manual. If the Print Head has been installed, you can remove it once and then reinstall. The Print Head could be damaged if the problem is not solved. Call the service center.
Six flashes The Inner Cover has been opened. If the inner cover is not closed when you start printing on paper, close it and then press the RESUME/CANCEL key on the printer.
Seven flashes The ink tank is not correctly installed. Some ink tank are not correctly installed. (The ink tank lamps flash. Multiple ink tanks with the same color can be installed. (The ink tanks’ lamps flash. Verify that ink tanks have been installed in the correct positions.
Eight flashes: The ink absorber is nearly full. The ink absorber has almost reached its maximum capacity. To continue printing, press the RESUME/CANCEL Button on your printer. For assistance, contact the service center.
Nine flashes: The digital camera has not responded to the printer. Verify that the printer is connected to a compatible device. Pict Bridge-compliant devices are required to print photos directly. If an operation takes too long, or it takes too many times to send data, a communication timeout occurs. This could cause printing to be cancelled. If this happens, you should disconnect the USB cable and reconnect it. Pict Bridge compliant devices can be printed from. Depending on their model, you might need to choose a Pict Bridge compliant printing mode before connecting them to the ij start cannon printer. After connecting your printer to your device, you may need to turn it on or manually select Play mode. Refer to the instruction manual for details on how to perform any necessary operations before you connect your device. If you are still having trouble with the error, try printing another photo.

Eleven flashesThe automatic alignment of the print head failed./The page size setting did not match the paper that was loaded into the printer. Automatic Print Head Alignment Clogged Print Head Nozzles To dismiss the error, press the RESUME/CANCEL key. Print the nozzle check pattern in order to verify the status of your Print Head. The Rear Tray can hold paper of any size, other than Letter or A4 To dismiss the error, press the RESUME/CANCEL Button. Next, load two sheets A4/Letter-sized plain papers in the Rear Tray. Always load paper on the rear tray for Automatic Print Head AlignmentThe Paper Output Slot can be exposed to strong sunlight. To dismiss the error, press the RESUME/CANCEL Button. Next, adjust the operating environment and/or position of your printer so that the Paper Output Slot does not face direct sunlight. If the problem persists after you have completed the above steps, click the RESUME/CANCEL Button to close the window and perform Manual Print Head Alignment. If you are printing the nozzle check patterns or doing Manual Print Head Alignment, Loading other than A4/Letter-sized papers is prohibited. To clear the error, press the RESUME/CANCEL Button on the printer. Then load plain A4/Letter-sized paper into the Rear Tray. Next, try again. If you are doing an ordinary job printing: To clear the error, press the RESUME/CANCEL key on the printer. Next, check the Page Size setting on the Page Setup sheet for Windows or Macintosh. Then load paper of the same size and print again. This error can occur even if the paper in the printer’s setting is exactly the same. Once printing is completed, select the Detect paper thickness check box once more and click Send. Clear the Detect paper width checkbox in the Maintenance sheet and then click on the Custom Settings button. Select Custom Settings in Canon IJ Printer Utility. Clear the Detect paper width checkbox and click Send. These settings can also be applied to Direct Printing with a digital camera.
Twelve flashes The paper is not correctly loaded in the Front Tray./The ink cartridge has been changed during printing. Print from the Front Tray To clear the error, press the RESUME/CANCEL key on the printer. Next, load the paper in the Front Tray following the instructions in Loading Paper. If the ink has been changed during printing: To clear the error, press the RESUME/CANCEL Button on the printer. Then, you can resume printing.

You must turn off the function to detect the remaining ink before you can continue printing. This function can be released by pressing and holding the RESUME/CANCEL key for at least five seconds. Then, release the button.*Remember to release the function for detecting remaining ink levels. Canon is not responsible for any problems or malfunctions that may arise from the continuation of printing or refilling ink. Depending on the Macintosh OS version, the name of the button that stops printing might vary. If multiple ink lamps flash, you should check the speed at which they flash. Ink is low if they flash fast (for about one second). Slow flashing, which occurs at about three seconds intervals, indicates that ink is low.
